Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses high frequency sound energy to conduct examinations and make measurements. Ultrasonic inspection can be used for flaw detection/evaluation, dimensional measurements, material characterization, and much more. Although there are a number of technologies employing ultrasound, the simplest explanation of what happens in this method is that sound energy is introduced via a transducer and propagates through the materials in the form of waves. When there is a discontinuity (such as a crack) in the wave path, part of the energy will be reflected back from the flaw surface. The reflected wave signal is transformed into an electrical signal by the transducer and is displayed or recorded in a variety of ways. Both surface and subsurface defects can be detected making ultrasonics a volumetric testing method. Applications vary in complexity from very small, hand-held manual units to very large, sophisticated automated systems. This method is used to inspect a variety of product forms including castings, forgings, and weldments. The structural steel, automotive, petrochemical, power generation, and aerospace industries are a few examples that utilize ultrasonic inspection.
The Level I and Level IIA ultrasonic courses require no prior training or experience by the student, however, the balance of our ultrasonic courses do have specific training prerequisites. Training material is presented in a manner that promotes understanding and the ability to make immediate application. Basic courses are ideal for NDT trainees who must have Level I and II training in order to qualify for certification as well as facility personnel who are responsible for or oversee the application of testing or Quality Control/Quality Assurance, whereas advanced courses such as Phased Array (PAUT) and Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) are suited for the experienced UT technician wishing to further their career in this testing method.
Course Content
U2410 Basic Theory and Wall Thickness Level I.
This course is presented in a 40-hour classroom course and provides the absolutely essential theory required for the student to perform valid ultrasonic inspection. Fundamental concepts and terminology of ultrasonics and the mathematical relationships that exist between them are explored in depth. Instrument calibration, types of equipment, and basic ultrasonic application in the form of wall thickness measurements are fully covered. Ample time is allowed for technique demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises. Lecture notes, text book and necessary testing materials are provided.

This curriculum meets or exceeds the content recommended by The American Society for Nondestructive Testing for Level I studies. Lesson-by-lesson quizzes monitor progress and all three evaluation examinations (General, Specific and Practical) are administered by a qualified ASNT ACCP Level III. The course also includes a Visual Acuity Test if needed by the student.
U2420 Ultrasonic Inspection Level II.
Prerequisite: U2410 or equivalent Level I training from a recognized source.
This course is presented in a 40-hour classroom course and provides a review of basic ultrasonic theory, evaluation of weldments, innovative techniques to detect and evaluate discontinuities, equipment and advanced calibration methods. Ample time is allowed for demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises. Lecture notes, text book and necessary testing materials are provided.

Alternative Course Options
U2411-WB Basic Theory and Wall Thickness - Level I. Online Course
Online courses are ideally suited for technicians that are in need of refresher training or for trainees that have other means of gaining hands-on experience. All online courses include the "body of knowledge" recommended by ASNT and includes a final exam that can be utilized as the method's General Examination.
U2421-WB UT - Level II [Part 1 - Equipment]. Online Course
The ultrasonic testing Level II “body of knowledge” recommended by ASNT is divided into two online courses, U2421-WB and U2422-WB, and both are required to complete Level II instruction. This course includes instrumentation and display formats, transducer selection and purpose, and methods of delivering ultrasonic energy to test pieces, such as emersion tank testing and AUT. It concludes with a final exam that can be utilized as the method's General Examination.
U2422-WB UT - Level II [Part 2 - Application]. Online Course
The ultrasonic testing Level II “body of knowledge” recommended by ASNT is divided into two online courses, U2421-WB and U2422-WB, and both are required to complete Level II instruction. This course continues from the Level II material covered in part one: U2421-WB and includes topics such as the mathematics involved in ultrasonic shearwave applications, weld inspection and evaluation, and calibration. It concludes with a final exam that can be utilized as the method's General Examination.
Specific and Practical Evaluation exams are not included in these online courses but can be scheduled for on-campus administration by one of our qualified instructors. Ask for "on-site" examination options if travel to our campus presents a problem.
U2412 UT Basic theory and Wall Thickness Level IIA . Because of the frequent need for certified ultrasonic wall thickness technicians without shearwave training or experience, we offer a special limited certification training course that is recognized by ASNT. The material covered is smaller in scope compared to U2410, and consequently the course length is shorter as well. Depending upon the specific needs and equipment employed, the training can be tailored to your needs in a three or four day time period. Call us for details if you think this option meets your needs.
